Ringless Barrels
MBB - Bb and A Ringless Barrels

An affordable alternative to the Traditional Barrels! Backun Ringless Barrels are crafted from selected pieces of cocobolo and grenadilla woods and feature our traditional taper. These barrels are also available in woods that show off a player's true color. The Backun Traditional Barrel is one of the most sought after accessories for the clarinet. Designed to work well with most makes of clarinet, these barrels are made from cocobolo and grenadilla woods with contrasting or matching wood rings. With the lack of metal rings, the barrel is able to vibrate freely giving the player a warm, resonant response with great articulation and superior tuning. Available in 1mm lengths from 62.5 mm to 67.5 mm, these barrels are the choice of may of the world's top professional artists and educators.

  

MBBEC - Eb Barrels

For players looking to add warmth and resonance to their tone, Backun Eb barrels are just what is needed. Available in grenadilla, cocobolo or tulipwood, with contrasting wooden rings, these different woods give the barrels various tonal colors. Traditional grenadilla is a brighter sound, while cocobolo is warmer and not as bright. Tulipwood Eb barrels are also available in limited quantities. This wood has a softer feel and sound, and is preferred by many orchestral and pit players who need projection without sacrificing tone and color.

With the addition of after-market bells to the clarinet world an entirely new level of customization has been made available to clarinet players. Usually considered to be part of the stock clarinet, the bell can in fact change the sound, tuning and feel ten-fold over the barrel. With bells in two different woods, players are given several options including wood type and taper. Of course, these bells come with Backun’s signature wooden tenon ring. The two models available are those with the voicing groove and those without. The voicing groove works to help tune and voice the “B” over the break, which is often a troublesome register shift for many clarinetists. By smoothing out this break and bringing the notes in tune, the voicing groove and taper solves issues that are inherent with many stock clarinets. While grenadilla is the traditional wood of choice, a large number of players, including many of the world’s finest performers and educators, prefer cocobolo bells as this wood offers a warm, rich tone that does not sacrifice projection of sound. It is important to note that some specific models of clarinet do not need the voicing groove. For players looking for a lighter bell with great projection and resonance, the Backun Flat Bell is a great alternative to the larger bells. With thinner walls and less weight, these bells work well on many A clarinets, as well as for chamber music performances where a lighter setup is needed. It is best if customers try several of each model to guarantee the best fit and sound.

MBBFC - Eb Bells

While the barrel helps the player adjust the tuning and resistance, the Backun Eb Bell is also a great addition to the clarinet, as it evens out the breaks in the registers, while helping to tune the altissimo notes. This bell is available in a variety of woods, tapers and tenon sizes. For wind symphony and traditional players the grenadilla Eb Bell is preferred, while many solo and orchestral players enjoy the warm, rounded tone of the cocobolo and tulipwood bells. Depending on the make and model of your clarinet, the Voicing Groove may help to ease some of the intonation issues that are inherent with your clarinet.

Morales/Backun Mouthpieces

Backun Musical Services uses CNC (Computer Numeric Control) technology and scientific properties to bring consistency to their wide range of clarinet mouthpieces including those for Eb and Bass Clarinet. The lines that run perpendicular to the table create a boundary layer that floats the reed on a cushion of air - giving the player increased response and articulation. As well, this boundary layer allows a greater selection of reeds to be used on the mouthpieces and limits the amount of work players need to do to make their reeds playable.

General Info on Backun Barrels, Bells & Mouthpieces

Woods, Lengths, and Tapers
Backun products are available through Conn-Selmer in two options: those for Buffet/Leblanc/Yamaha clarinets and those for the newer models of Selmer clarinets. While it is important to find a good fit for the barrel and bell, some of these products work best with specific models. For example: barrels ranging from 62.5 mm to 66.5 mm are made specifically for Selmer clarinets, while those from 64 mm to 67 mm and 67.5 mm are for Buffet/Leblanc/Yamaha models. This can be understood when looking at the size of the barrel taper and tenon, as Selmer barrels are approximately .560 in the taper and Buffet/Leblanc/Yamaha barrels range from .589 - .575. For older models of Selmer and various other clarinet makes, it is best to try the Buffet/Leblanc/Yamaha models of barrels and bells. With regards to wood selection, grenadilla is considered by many to be a more traditional choice that is best utilized for orchestral and wind symphony playing. Cocobolo is the preferred choice of wood for many Backun artists. It offers the player a great range of projection and warmth of tone.

Testing Backun Products
Because wood is a living organism, like clarinets, barrels and bells do change from time to time so it is best to test several pieces when looking. When trying Backun barrels and bells please be sure to use a generous amount of cork grease and never try to force a barrel or bell on to the tenon, as this might cause the wooden ring and tenon to crack. It is also important to note that many players choose to mix and match Backun barrels and bells. With the many options available to customers, the combinations are endless. For those who perform different genres of music or play at different pitches (such as those players performing in Europe or Japan), the fine tuning and adjusting that can be done with mouthpieces, barrels and bells truly customizes the clarinet like never before.

Warranty
Backun barrels and bells come with a one-year warranty against any defects and cracking. If the products crack or have any defects within one year of purchase Backun Musical Services Ltd. will repair the part. If repair is not possible Backun Musical Services will replace the part at no additional cost to the customer.
